One of the main causes of the polarization we witness in the halls of government is the inability for one side to commend the other when something goes right. Unfortunately, egos, politics, and a misguided notion of what constitutes personal strength prevents people from reaching out to commend the other side.

Over the years, I have been a sharp critic of the school board for what I believe are great lapses in accountability, transparency, and fiscal responsibility.

But there have been times when I have commended the board for actions they have taken on behalf of students and/or taxapayers. A couple that come to mind are the defense of the district’s health (sex) education program. I believe at the time that I called it “near perfect,” or something close. Another time was the applause for creating a page on the district’s website that honored those students in the area who chose to serve our country in the armed forces instead of attending college.

In an effort to attract parents and students to a local school new academic program is being launched at Adams Elementary. This is an excellent step in the right direction. Results will not be immediate, but it may be enough of a signal to parents in Mesa Verde that at least the board is trying.

Trying something new or different is all anyone should ask.
