The schools in Newport are thriving. Several in Costa Mesa are not. In fact, at least four of them are underperforming to the point where they qualify for intervention via the Parent Empowerment Act (aka Parent Trigger).
I’m not advocating a Parent Trigger, merely using that benchmark to point out the dire condition.
Who’s to blame? We have excellent teachers. We have bright students. We have schools in good physical condition. So, let’s see… Hmmm… That leaves… The school board!
Newport parents: Your schools are doing well and as your board member, I have no plans to mess with success. But you can have your cake and eat it, too. You can continue to have good schools AND have a board member who will be a better steward of your tax dollars, who will stop the rubber stamping of administration recommendations, and who will breathe new life into a complacent panel.
Costa Mesa parents: It’s time. Out with the old in with the new.
If this is what you want, vote for Steve Smith on November 4 and tell your friends, family and co-workers to voter for me as well.
